With holidays abroad currently on hold, a lot of us are planning staycations and breaks a little less further afield. Here in the UK, we’re lucky to have so many beautiful holiday spots practically on our doorstep, and most holiday destinations are no more than a 10 hour drive away, meaning there’s no excuse not to get exploring! So it’s not that surprising to hear that in the past year, motorhomes have become the number one choice of holiday for families, with sales and rentals of campervans increasing by the day.

Not only are motorhome holidays ideal for families, as you can conveniently pack everything you need into your portable home, but they also allow you the luxury of parking up somewhere for the night before driving somewhere new the next day. You’re not tied to one destination, or to a strict itinerary, you can adapt your trip day by day based on anything from the weather, to simply what you fancy doing next!

But when holidaying in a campervan you’ll want to be prepared for every eventuality, especially if you decide to try wild camping rather than parking up at a campsite. And this of course includes packing a first aid kit. When travelling, especially as a family, you just know there’ll be a few bumps, cuts and bruises along the way, so it’s a good idea to pack everything you might need in case of any accidents.

If you’re new to motorhome holidays or have just bought your first campervan and don’t know where to start with first aid supplies, then don’t panic! There are a few first aid must haves for motorhomes, so use our helpful list to help determine exactly what you need to stock up on and stash away in your van.

Here are some of the basics we would recommend:

• Selection of plasters in various sizes and shapes
• Selection of bandages and gauze strips
• Safety pins to secure bandages
• Medical tape
• Antiseptic spray or wipes
• Hand sanitiser
• Disposable gloves
• Scissors and tweezers
• Paracetamol and ibuprofen (as well as Calpol for children)
• Vaseline
• Antihistamines
• Insect bite treatment/repellent

It’s also important to get organised and stock up on any prescription medication that you need, remember to be prepared and get enough to last you just over the duration of your trip.

When you’re organising your kit for the first time, it’s a good idea to buy a ready-made first aid kit. These are designed to provide you with all the basics you could need. You’ll then be able to add additional products and items to suit you and your families needs, such as painkillers, medications, etc. The more trips you take, the more you’ll learn about the different situations you and your family find yourself in, and you can start to adapt your kit to you. For example, if you or your children are prone to travel sickness, then you might want to pack some travel sickness bands and any medicine which helps.
